Memorial Page for Derek Brooks

Derek Brooks, 36, a former resident of New City, and a former member of St. Augustine Church in New City, died Friday, June 2, 2006, at his home in Roswell, New Mexico, where he was a partner in the law firm of Hinkle, Hensley, Shanor and Martin. Derek had been suffering for about a year from germ cell cancer. Born in New York City, Derek attended Street School and Clarkstown North High School. After graduating from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he majored in geology, Derek gained a master's degree in geology at the University of Wyoming in Laramie and a doctorate in jurisprudence at the University of Washington and Lee Law School in Lexington, Virginia. Derek's life was dedicated to faith, family, community and to the highest standards of the legal profession. He helped many others to become aware of and to value these essential ideals. Derek also had a special love of the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and gardening, but more even than to these activities, he was dedicated to the Boy Scouts. An Eagle Scout himself, Derek became a scout master in Roswell and found great satisfaction in giving back what he had received in Scout lore and values. Derek was buried from the Church of the Assumption in Roswell at a Mass of the Resurrection attended by hundreds of mourners. Derek leaves behind his wife, Alicia; his daughter, Anna Catherine; his parents, Edward and Sigrid; and his brother, Stephen.
